Health Screening in Elementary School (Vision, Hearing, and BMI)

All health screenings conducted in school are required by Massachusetts State Law.

Screenings are ongoing throughout the school year. If you do not wish your child to participate, you must write a letter to the school nurse declining your child’s participation. This letter must be written each year and be specific to which screening you do not wish your child to participate.

  • Vision screening is done in grades 1-5, 7, and 10
  • Hearing screening is done in grades 1-3, 7, and 10
  • BMI (Body Mass Index) screening is done in grades 1, 4, 7, and 10

You will be only be notified if your child’s vision or hearing screening is outside of the normal limits.  You will be notified by a screening referral letter.

When should I keep my child home from school?

The following are guidelines and may be reasons why the school nurse would send your child home from school:

  • Temperature greater than 100.4
  • Your child must be fever free for 24 hours, without the use of fever reducing medication such as Motrin/ibuprofen or Tylenol/acetaminophen
  • Your child must be without vomiting for 24 hours.
  •  If your child is placed on antibiotics s/he must complete 24 hours of dosing prior to returning to school.

If you have any questions about any of the above please call your school nurse and/or check with your pediatrician.
